Introduction to the California Human Development Report

Introduction to the California Human Development Report

Please join me on Monday, February 8th, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., to learn about an exciting proposal to develop the first Human Development Report for the State of California, a tool that could help shape the debate about our state’s future.

This reporting tool comes to California in an era marked by the most challenging economic turmoil in decades, a less than optimal state governance structure, and a widening gap between the haves and have-nots. The tool will provide user-friendly and robust data for policy makers, philanthropic and nonprofit leaders, the business community, and others who seek to better understand and ignite opportunity in our diverse state. The American Human Development Project's report will measure three basic building blocks of a decent life – health, education, and income. These measures are then used to identify factors that limit human potential, explore alternative priorities, and empower people to hold elected officials accountable for progress. The national report and state-level reports for Louisiana and Mississippi have proven to be powerful tools in a wide range of policy and advocacy efforts.

Carla Javits of REDF and Sarah Burd-Sharps of the American Human Development Report will join us to present the goals and context of the California Human Development Report.

RSVP by Feburary 1st to Scott Owens at sjo@sff.org or 415.733.8518.

We hope you will join us for this lively discussion about the scope and impact of the project.

Sincerely,

Sandra R. Hernández, M.D.
Chief Executive Officer
